Londoners Pay Tribute to Jay Dilla and His Legacy

London Dj and Promoter Spin Doctor (Doctors Orders), put together another succesful annual J-Dilla Tribute (J Dilla Changed My Life). The Yearly event is put on in February to celebrate the legacy of the late producer and the musical legacy he left for all Hip-Hoppers worldwide to enjoy. This year it took place at Skala, and Dilla’s mother (Ma Dukes) was in attendance and took the stage announcing that next year she was going to jump on the turntables!

The Detroit Native rose to prominence while producing for Dela-Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Slum VIllage and Common. He had a great solo career as an instrumentalist and rapper as well. Vibe magazine has ranked Dilla in the top 8 Hip-Hop producers in the History of the Genre. The music he produced touched peoples lives, and it can be seen around the world.

The Show features some of the best known acts in Delaware, and is meant to showcase talent from the “302″. The line up this year includes, The 49ers, Soviet Union, Nick Boots, Philly C, Cartel Ent. Kool Keith perfomed for the first time in Delaware

Kool Keith blew the roof of of Delaware with his classics like “Ego Trippin”, “BLue Flowers”, “Girl Let Me Touch you There” and more. This show was special, as it was the first time, Kool Keith was rocking in the first state, before flying out to Tampa to do a show for Nike. He brought out all of his personas under one roof, and even delighted the crowd with a 3 and a half minute freestyle to a self produced beat. We will be releasing video, and live audio from the show, but until then here’s a teaser from a classic night of Hip Hop in Delaware.

Phife Dawg Returns to London for Beats, Rhymes, Life UK Premier

A Tribe Called Quest’s Phife Dawg returned to London for a two day tour to promote the UK premiere of Michael Rapaport’s documentary, Beats Rhymes Life. The first night, at London’s music venue, Koko was completely sold out. It was the first time UK audiences watched the critically acclaimed documentary.

Shortly after the screening, Phife took questions from the audience which included how is his relationship with Q-Tip today in which he replied that childhood friends are not beefing with each other and wants to do another Tribe album but could not specify a date. Another question from a fan was which living producers would Phife choose to work on his album. Phife replied “two from DJ Primo, four from Ali Shaheed Muhammad, four from Q-Tip. and not forgetting Dr Dre, DJ Quik and the late great Dilla”

The rapper performed tracks from his new album, Songs in the Key of Phife Volume 1: Cheryl’s Big Son and several A Tribe Called Quest classics including Award Tour, Bonita Applebum and Scenario. Phife also had a moment of silence for Heavy D, who’s funeral was in Mount Vernon on Sunday 20th November. Phife shared a story about the time he was in hospital (a scene featured in the documentary) where Heavy D was one of the very few rappers to give him a call – see below for video where you can see Phife telling the story in his own words.

The five foot assassin returns to London tomorrow at Cargo, Shoreditch. If you missed tonight’s gig at Koko, we highly recommend you get down to see Phife Diggy. The show was personal,entertaining and definitely worth the wait.

The Universal Zulu Nation is celebrating 38 years of existence, and the spreading of Hip-Hop culture to the global phenomenon that it is today. Yaheard.com caught up with The Zulu Nation at the Yotel in midtown Manhattan on November 11, 2011. Artists like Kool Keith, Talib Kweli, D Nice, Grand Master Dee (Whodini) Marc Live, Afrika Bambaata, Q-Tip and many more all came together under one roof, to honor the Zulu Nation and its successes in taking Hip-Hop from the Bronx, and transforming it into a world wide phenomenon. Djays, like Jazzy Jay, Hektek and Q-Tip, kept the New York crowd on the dance floor into the wee hours of the morning, as B-Boys from as far away as Japan and France, showed off their foot work and pop locking skills.

The Zulu Nation was formed by Afrika Bambaataa the former leader of the infamous Black Spades street gang, as an alternative to violence in the desolate streets of The  Bronx. These same streets were toured by then president Jimmy Carter, as he vowed to give federal aid to New York City’s roughest Ghetto. Block after block of burnt down tenement slums were the backdrop to the birth of the Hip-Hop culture. This was a far cry, from the commercial image associated with Hip-Hop Today. Every year, the Zulu Nation comes together and the public is able to party side by side with the founders and creators of the Hip-Hop movement and culture. It’s a joyous occasion of Peace Love and Unity.
