The Roots Mural Project has curated exhibition at a new space in the South Street Headhouse District. The project was founded by The Roots members, Tarik “Black Thought” Trotter and Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson.

The mural project will include multimedia elements such as video, online interaction, city-wide engagement paint days, pop up studios, and a curriculum for a youth arts called “Roots 101.”

The mural will be painted at 6th and South Streets, in the South Street Headhouse District neighborhood – an area of Philadelphia where The Roots were founded. The building at 600 South Street is across the street from the Mural Arts Program mural Mapping Courage: Honoring the Legacy of WEB Dubois and Engine 11 at 601 South Street.

Mural Arts selected a group of Philadelphia muralists to create The Roots Mural Project. The team, known as the Amber Design Collective features Tatyana Fazlalizadeh and includes artists David Guinn, Ernel Martinez, Charles Barbin, Tatyana Fazlalizadeh, Willis Humphrey, and Keir Johnston.

“The first meeting with the artists was amazing; we shared ideas of what the final mural could end up looking like. It’s beyond anything Tariq and I ever dreamed of,” said ?uestlove. “And to have it along South Street, near the same corners we were kicked off of for playing our music is fantastic.”

Tatyana Fazlalizadeh will be hosting a free solo exhibition on Friday 27 April. Her work uses oil on canvas to bring depth to thought-provoking portraits of those who live in the margins of society–the underrepresented, disenfranchised–and others who cannot speak for their rights. Fazlalizadeh has developed a series of pop, cultural, and political illustrations of icons like President Barack Obama, Questlove, Janelle Monáe, Kanye West and more.
